Social Skills Care Plus NJ

Social Skills is a skill-building program for children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 that develops the skills needed to facilitate relationships and improve communication with others. A recommended bi-weekly Parent Support Group runs simultaneously with the program.

Program Goals:

  • Improve peer communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Manage frustrations
  • Build and strengthen self-confidence
  • Increase cooperation
  • Cope with rejection and bullying behavior

Specialized Services: During this 8-week group, members will develop and practice social skills through role playing, group activities, worksheets, and discussions.

Participants will learn to:

  • Use self control
  • Cope with anger
  • Express feelings
  • Communicate effectively
  • Problem solve

A concurrent bi-weekly parent support group is offered in order to help parents learn and discuss ways to reinforce their children’s social skills.


2016-2017 Schedule:

7-9 years of age: Tuesdays from 6:00pm – 7:00pm in Paramus
6/13/17 – 8/8/17

10-13 years of age: Tuesdays from 6:00pm – 7:00pm in Paramus
6/6/17 – 8/1/17

About the facilitators…

Kayla Hanley, LSW

Facilitator for Social Skills Group

Kayla Hanley is a licensed social worker who enjoys working with children, adolescents and their families. After receiving her Bachelors Degree from Saint Peter’s University in Psychology, minoring in Sociology and Criminal Justice, Kayla went on to obtain her Masters in Social Work from Fordham University.  Kayla has experience working with children with extensive trauma histories, as well as helping children with various behavioral and emotional needs. Kayla currently works as a crisis responder with Children’s Mobile Crisis Response and Stabilization Services. She is excited to facilitate the children’s social skills group and help each child reach their full potential.

Jennifer Kapr, LAC

Facilitator for Social Skills Group

Jennifer Kapr is a Licensed Associate Counselor who has been working with children, adolescents and families for the past two years. Jen has her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Ramapo College of New Jersey and her Master’s in Forensic Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Jen currently works with the Children’s Out-patient Endeavors program with Care Plus and has been facilitating Social Skills groups for the past year. Jen additionally works in a school setting with middle and high school students on wellness initiatives and academic success and teaches various science courses including Psychology and Forensic Science. Jen looks forward to working with youth and families towards their goals and creating a supportive and fostering environment.

 

Kari Scimanico, LPC

Parent facilitator for Social Skills Group

Kari Scimanico is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has extensive clinical experience working with children, adolescents, teenagers and adults for 15 years in a variety of settings.  She is currently an Intensive In-Community clinician for CarePlus’s Partnership for Children program and is well versed in facilitating therapy groups for both adults and youth.   Kari received her Educational Specialist and Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Seton Hall University. Kari looks forward to using her family therapy background to help parents support their children’s growth.

 

Gabriella Urato, LCSW

Facilitator for Social Skills Group

Gabriella Urato is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who counsels children, adolescents, and adults. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Ramapo College, minoring in Psychology and Gerontology, she completed her Master’s in Social Work at Fordham University.

Gabriella has experience with facilitating individual and group therapy, as well as community outreach with adolescents in transition. She has worked with youth presenting with anxiety, ADHD, and spectrum disorders. Gabriella specializes in working with LGBTQ youth and currently facilitates the CarePlus Teen Social Skills group as well as the CarePlus ALLIES wellness and support group for LGBTQ youth. She is passionate about her group work and providing a safe place for adolescents to obtain support amongst their peers.
